ADES Response to TIMSS Report
David Cameron (ADES President) has issued the following statement on behalf of ADES in response to the publication of the TIMSS report which indicates that Scotland is being overtaken in international comparisons in Mathematics and Science by other nations:
"These latest results confirm some of the anxieties that we have had about performance in Mathematics and Science. These are areas that all local authorities take a particular interest in and we are determined to do what we can to ensure that we improve our international position. These results confirm our commitment to the reforms that a Curriculum for Excellence will bring. They also reinforce the importance of using these reforms to make us more ambitious and to effect genuine improvements for learners.
We welcome the priority that the Cabinet Secretary has given to this and the action that she has set out. We know that we have many excellent teachers and that many young people have an outstanding experience in Mathematics and in Science. However, we need to look closely at the consistency of that experience across all our schools and classes and also at the action that we need to take collectively to build on that".
